When do you feel most alive?

There is an excellent Congolese song I learned from my dear friend Elie Kihonia called Mutwashi. In the song, the lyrics translate as "We are giving thanks for being alive today." In light of the recent events in Haiti, this sentiment has never felt more true to me. Just to have the opportunity to wake up and live again is a gift. Seeing people being pulled alive from the rubble after ten days gives me pause to reflect and remember to be grateful not only for my family, health and abundance- but also for the chance to try again.

I'm interested to hear from you on this...
When do you feel most alive?

  1. I feel most alive when I'm playing or singing music. Especially improvising with a great band. Sometimes the music just takes over, I'm letting go, immersed in the moment, listening, feeling, getting into a deep place within, and connecting to other musicians in that deep place, and sharing it with an audience. Very Cool! Other things that make me feel alive- laughing, experiencing nature, biking, connecting with family and friends, love.

  2. I feel most alive when I feel connected to the universe. There is no way of predicting when this will occur...but there are situations when it is more likely to occur than in others--I crave those moments. The most profound happened during a meditation when I could feel and hear my heart beating, my body began to pulse to its rhythm--then the air began pulsing outward from my body, connecting and mingling with the air and space around the others in the room. It's surreal moments like those that make me feel alive and connected to the greatness that surrounds me.
